PIECES FOR WOODWIND DOUBLERS
Theatre pit orchestras and function bands often require reed players to have comparable skill levels on multiple instruments, but the pool of solo repertoire to practice those specific skills is comparatively small.
Here you can purchase original solo material for aspiring woodwind doublers that can be used to hone the skills required when playing in professional theatre orchestras and function bands. Covering a variety of commercial styles, the pieces are inspired by some of the world's most successful musicals, television shows, film composers and pop artists.
At the bottom of this page you'll find mock-up demos or live demos performed by Paul Saunders (paulsaundersclarinet.co.uk) for the 'commercial' pieces. A fully orchestrated backing track MP3 is provided for each of the commercial pieces alongside a piano score intended for reference and practice only. The pieces are intended to be played in a pit orchestra set up i.e. seated with instruments on stands. As a side note, playing along to the tracks whilst wearing a single headphone for monitoring is recommended. With the increased use of click tracks and workplace noise regulations in theatre, headphone monitoring is becoming more commonplace. It’s an additional hurdle and something worth practising, as it affects how you perceive your own sound and creates another obstacle for quick instrument switches.
